that's just the way it is. addiction affects virtually every family in america. >> do they have a family history or something that stems from a bad incident in life or what is it? >> this is a withdrawal you're looking at. it's a combination. there is a genetic potential for this disease. i treated about 10,000 addicts in my career. i can only think of a handful where i didn't see a specific family history. to have addiction turned on, that gene activated to the point you need to see me. >> you get the worst of the worse? >> i do. there is virtually 100% probability of childhood trauma, sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect if you need to see me. >> have you ever lost hope? just had a day where you said -- >> i don't lose hope myself, but i've lost hope for a patient many times. i'll be damned if three years later that person doesn't come up and say, thank you, i know you kicked me out of treatment. i wasn't ready to hear what you had to say. now they are in a graduate program to become a psychologist. that gives you hope to go do

more. keep you going. >> how many tries does it usually take? a lot of people can't do it on the first or second try. >> it typically takes -- it's typically not you're treated and you stay sober. it's not typical. it's typical people, once they have been comprehensively and properly treated they'll be in and out of treatment and finally stay with it. i can't give you a number. if somebody stays with us, we know they are going to stay and get well. if they drift away from us, they are going to die. >> every one of them said, i am going to die. >> this group. that is what's exciting about this group. we could really help them. i thought this group we can help. >> you have to be so far to the bottom all you can do is look up. >> not only does that help to the probability of embracing recovery, but we specialize in the very ill. psychiatrically, medically and physically. >> a lot of these guys and girls have to get rid of their friend and circles? . >> that is the piece people miss. they think of treatment as

>> let's talk about the bed. >> most of us do have a frame with space underneath. this beautiful bed from crate and barrel. i suggest doing beautiful woven baskets. these are from crate and barrel and they are wide and long, but low to the ground. i suggest doing sheets. it's very handy to change the bed. even something as unusual as towels you could store under your bed. maximize the use of your space under your bed. >> extra blankets. the one thing you use the most. in my house i'm an icicle and my husband is a fire in bed. take the seasonal throw and place it in a basket. >> okay. >> take us to the night stand. that is so usually cluttered up with books. >> exactly. this can attract a lot of clutter. i say one, two, three philosophy. something to read, something to drink and something to tell you what time it is. i like to use a mirrored tray on

your night stand. reason being mirrors reflect. if you add a lot of clutter, it's going to reflect that clutter. that is to inspire you to declutter. also the fabulous night table. >> instead of magazines as stacks, think of vertically. i love this vertical extension from tv too. if you collect beautiful scarves, you can drape them and have a display. from ikea, we have a cabinet and drawer. that is great for getting rid of the stacks of books you have, a very limited surface in the bedroom but still handy for reeding in bed. >> the dresser. >> the dresser. as my husband's dresser drawers go as one big mess. >> who does this? >> bobbie thomas. >> and jill. >> i would suggest you get bamboo organizers from bed, bath and beyond.

90 today, getting even hotter for the weekend. especially in those inland valleys. now by the time we get to saturday we'll lose a lot of that moisture from the front. so we're not going to see a terribly wet pattern here across the east. but a few showers still in oklahoma, texas, back into arkansas and missouri as well. dry across the west. this is where temperatures will be on the rise on saturday. we're looking at some heat building into sacramento. san francisco only at 74. but getting into some of the deserts, palm springs and arizona it's going to be a hot one. 79 in chicago on saturday, 74 in new york city. it's a beautiful fall weather continuing in the northeast. 85 in atlanta, getting a little bit hotter for the southeast states. monday more showers expected. this is going to eventually move into new york city. places like d.c. as we track the next system. 78 in louisville on monday, 68 in denver. what a change. we even had a little snow on the peaks this last week. 75 in kansas city by tuesday.

the controversial book "the end of men and the rise of women." she is here along with her long-suffering husband, editor and chief david plotz. >> who happens to be her boss. >> how's that working? >> it's really good. i really make the decisions, he just has the title. >> basically, you believe women outpaced men in the work place and at home. we did a poll at today.com and found out 57% of our viewers agree. they think women are surpassing men. what's going on here? >> women are just having an easier time adapting to this economy and getting the education they need to take advantage of job opportunities. what the book explains is how that's changed all sorts of decisions we make about marriage, about love, about intimacy, how we raise our children, about the work place. the book explains how to navigate this new world, basically. >> why are we still paid 75%? >> the wage cap always comes up. >> women realize that is the

truth. >> the wage gap is not what it seems, but part of the problem is women have to start at the bottom and work their way up. so those things are still true. >> is it emasculating to men? when women outearn their husbands and seem to be ruling the roost? >> i think it's great. in our household it's great. i'm glad to have a wife who is successful and out there doing. i'm going to go home after the show and back to the kids in washington and take care of them while hanna talks about it. i think there are wonderful things about it. i think the point hanna makes well, men have to be more flexible and change to adapt to this new economy in a way some of us haven't. >> there used to expectation. if you got an education there would be, you would have your choice of jobs out there. are women doing jobs men are not willing to do? >> some is women are doing jobs men are not willing to do and they work their way up. and there is just expanding opportunity. if you look at the ceo of yahoo while she is pregnant, there are

things women could do now they couldn't do before. by the way, i trained him to say that. >> when you look at hillary clinton, do we think the glass ceiling is gone? >> not completely shattered. i think we are still uncomfortable with women in power. in the book i talk about how women should navigate that. because we're still not totally there yet. you see a woman who is dominant and aggressive -- >> careful. >> what is your point, hanna? >> i'm just making hand gestures. >> we are just party girls at heart. but real power comes from knowing who you are and being comfortable with that and not listening to all the different voices around you that will tear you down. you've got to know who you are and go out and get what you want. >> that's what i say in the book. women have to realize these stereotypes are out there they should be who they are. >> what is it like to be your wife's boss? how does that work and how does it work at home?

>> i'm in no sense my wife's boss either in the office or at home. i think we have a really, you can correct me if i'm wrong, sweetie -- >> i will. >> we have a cooperative relationship. there is a see-saw. there are things if there is a physical thing that needs to be done, i take care of it. there are times when hanna is telling me -- she was just texting our babysitter what i have to do when i get home. >> so glad it works out for you. the rest of us have problems. >> good luck with your book. thank you for being with us. sara will show us what makes you beautiful in one of her best webtastic videos. >> this is "today" on nbc.
